Legal Counsel
unspun
We are looking for an experienced, energetic and strategic legal counsel to join our growing team.
You will be an indispensable member in helping to realize unspun’s mission to reduce human carbon emissions by 1% through intentional and local manufacturing - working as a generalist on every issue unspun faces. While you’ll contribute in your area of expertise, be it IP, corporate, contracting, etc., you'll also provide general advice on a range of legal issues. From negotiating commercial agreements with companies around the world to working on regulatory, IP, and employment issues, you will be a core member of the unspun’s leadership team.
About Us
unspun is a robotics and digital apparel company, with a mission to reduce global carbon emissions by 1% through automated, localized, and intentional manufacturing.
Included in Time's Best Inventions & Fast Company's World Changing Ideas, unspun aims to rapidly transition the trillion-dollar apparel world into one that is more intentional, inclusive, and efficient by focusing on the overlap between sustainability and profitability. If you're motivated by having an impact on a massively wasteful industry, we’d love to talk!
About You
As our first in-house legal counsel, you'll be on the frontline of our commercialization efforts and a critical part of scaling from a Series B to Series C company, across compliance, risk mitigation, and capital strategy.
The never-ending fight against entropy doesn't discourage you; instead, you relish optimizing processes, reining in costs, and doing things right. You're a pro at high-level communication but aren't afraid to dive into the weeds with cross-functional teams.
What You'll Do
- Accelerate the closing of commercial contracts and negotiations through creating a scalable system to draft, review and negotiate contracts, working closely with counterpart legal counsel at some of the world’s largest and most sophisticated retail, apparel and textile organizations
- Create and implement a global risk and compliance framework, managing a network of external professionals (lawyers, financiers, consultants)
- Assist in unspun’s ongoing capital formation strategy and help drive equity, debt, grant and other fundraising activities
- Advise on employee relations & support on employment law compliance
- Collaborate with our external IP lawyers on IP documentation and strategy
Ideal Qualities
- JD degree and membership in at least one U.S. state bar
- 5-15+ years of experience at a top-tier law firm
- Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills
- Strong analytical and writing skills
- Careful attention to detail with a proven ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment
- Some experience working cross-culturally
- Passionate about climate impact and innovation
Bonus Points
- Experience working with Series B and Series C+ startups
- Experience with equity rounds and debt financing
- Experience working on international governance law, particularly in the EU
If you don't meet all of the requirements listed above, but can make up for it with a voracious passion to learn how to do so, we strongly encourage you to apply.
Our philosophy
We won’t roll our eyes if your socks don’t match. We get it. But then, if you spend those extra few minutes in the morning matching your socks and shirt, we get that too. Our workspaces are sometimes spotless and sometimes chaotic, and we celebrate messy exploration. We work through complex problems but generate simple and elegant solutions. We strive to look at things differently, and never do anything solely because “that’s the way it’s always been done.”
We’re a team of designers and engineers, industry-veterans and serial entrepreneurs, artists and developers. We’re aspiring chess masters and climbers, bakers and photographers. Originally spun out of Stanford and the University of Colorado, we now call the Bay Area home, with strong ties to Hong Kong. We are looking for teammates who share our desire to work on ambitious problems and leave the world better than we found it.
unspun is an equal opportunity employer, and we are committed to being a diverse team that reflects a broad range of background, thought, and experience. We do not discriminate based on race, color, religion, sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, age, national origin, status as an individual with a disability, status as protected veteran, or any other legally protected characteristics. Women, minorities, and people from underrepresented backgrounds are strongly encouraged to apply.
